Classic album series: Gallows - Grey Britain
Not so much protest music as a bleak look into how Gallows view the state of Britain, Grey Britain painted a rich picture of Gallows' ideas and was wholeheartedly honest in a way that had not been seen in a punk group since the 70s. The ferocious riffs of Laurent Barnard and Steph Carter hit harder than any punk album of the last ten years, and Frank Carter’s relentless vocals may as well be spat in your face from an inch away.
Gallows addressed Britain’s issues with steadfast commitment across the gloom-ridden 52 minutes, with lyrics ranging from pestilence to suicide and finally starting again after a (presumably) symbolic death. Whether you agree with the almost apocalyptical view presented of our nation or not, Grey Britain is more real and honest than 99% of albums made, and wholly deserves the critical acclaim it received.
