Accuser - The Forlorn Divide

Teutonic thrashers impress but fail to innovate

With critically acclaimed thrash releases like Who Dominates Who and Repent to their name, Accuser already proved their skill before separating in 2004. Though it's hard not to wish for some evolution into an area beyond the now prosaic Teutonic and Bay Area-inspired thrash style found on these albums, The Forlorn Divide is an enjoyable composition that is let down by a slightly derivative and formulaic approach.

'Tribulation' seems almost lackadaisical despite its undeniably ferocious assault, but newly appointed guitarist Dennis Rybakowski's searing riffs and expert soloing carries much of the album through, with Frank Kimpel's bass also making a significant contribution to the relentless nature of tracks like 'Arbitrary Law' .

Diehard thrash fans will find a lot here to devour, with the rolling pummel of 'Impending Doom' and the vicious riffing and soaring soloing of 'Perish By Oblivion' being instant standouts, just don't expect anything too innovative.

7/10

The Forlorn Divide is out March 11 via Metal Blade Records
